Lent 2015 – Day 04: The Language of Angels

Today’s chant is from the service of the Dormition of the Theotokos. This arrangement is characterized by an ornamental style and the use of the syllables Te-Ri-Rem which is described by many as ‘the language of angels.’ These syllables are used in extended chants used in night-long vigils in convents and are highly improvisational.

Others say that terirem are the Virgin Mary’s lullaby for baby Christ…
